LIFT09 Conference Video: What can we learn from the predictions that did not happen?

Patrick J. Gyger is the director of the Science Fiction museum in Switzerland (”Maison d’Ailleurs is located in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland. It owns over 60,000 books and thousands of pulp magazines, as well as many other items related to science fiction and its imagery”). He did a great overview of futuristic graphical and images material from the past. And had some intriguing insights.

Raimo’s talk at the MWG Congress

Last week I gave a presentation at the MWG Congress in The Netherlands. The topic of the event was Experimentation. Personally I don’t believe in experimentation. In this incredible dynamic market, where there is no status quo anymore, one needs to have clear intentions.. During my presentation I used the metaphor of trying to lift one’s leg.. I asked the audience to try to lift their left leg.. Everybody reacted by lifting there leg.. I explained that they raised there leg and did not TRY to raise their leg.

Trying is nothing. You either do or you don’t!

Below you see the presentation and an interview(in dutch) by Ronnie Overgoor touching the topics of the presentation.

Exploring What Women Want in Mobile

While the mobile industry is rapidly growing, most mobiles and services still seem to appeal to, and are targeted, at men. For the market to fully mature - it is about time to reach the ‘other 50%’: female users.

And even though there are many attempts in reaching this target group, most women feel not being taken seriously when mobiles are being marketed with their 58 tech features, but also not with ‘pink phones with fake diamonds‘, let alone ‘ovulation calculators‘.

This might not be surprising if you consider that most mobile conferences and developer teams are focusing on men - and women are almost invisible in this area.

Now is the time to change this and help the market mature. SPRXmobile’s Claire Boonstra has, together with Helen Keegan (technokitten, Beepmarketing) and Maarten den Braber taken the initiatieve to to create a facilitating platform where consumer research and ‘female insights’ can be shared, and where women can explain how they would like to see and experience their mobiles and services.

The platform is created - and input delivered - by women, but is targeted at the entire mobile industry: men and women, manufacturers and service developers, bloggers and journalists, telecom operators, retailers and researchers, marketers and advertisers. And anyone else who feels attracted to this subject.

A kickoff meeting is planned February 5th in Amsterdam, more events in London to be announced soon - working towards an International Conference in Amsterdam on August 17th, 2009.

You can follow and contribute to this initiative on twitter, by subscribing to the meetup - and on the website (to be launched soon).

Video: Raimo Explains the Uitzendinggemist Mobile Application

Yesterday the Uitzendinggemist mobile application was launched. The web version of Uitzendinggemist (which means means missed broadcasts) contains most of the broadcasts from the Dutch PBS (omroepen). It is a Video On Demand platform. The mobile client streams the top 10 of the day.

In the video Raimo van der Klein from SPRXmobile explains how the application works. The camera didn’t focus that much on the phone yet you still get the idea.

Get the application by texting “GEMIST” to 3333 or go to http://m.omroep.nl/gemist on your mobile. Rights management prevents the video’s to work out side of Holland. Also make sure that you operator contract covers video streams for a reasonable fee.

Amsterdam Bike Route Planner Coming to the iPhone

I am a cyclist and live in Amsterdam. Although I know my way around I still sometimes want to know if there is a better route of just see what the distance is. And as a cyclist i cant do that well on TomTom or a web route planner. Those are for cars.

Until Routecraft that is. Ever since they came online I use it. It’s a sweet web app with smart features which not just gives you the route but also the amount of tree’s that you save while cycling.

And now they will launch their Iphone app on December 12th. I’ll download it!

Future of Mobile continued

On November 17th 2008, I was in London attending the excellent Future of Mobile conference. For those of you who read Dutch, please refer to my blogpost on Dutchcowgirls.

For those who don’t and would like to see some very nice video coverage I would like to recommend the series of video interviews by Mobile Industry Review on this event.

Here’s a video in which Tomi T Ahonen (at the end) and I (around 1min30) were interviewed (me and Tomi in the same video - a great honour!)

WiMax in Amsterdam!

Wow.. Just read that the first commercial WiMax network in the Netherlands, called Aerea, is going live..
For 29,95 you receive a PCMCIA card (for XP only) and get a month access to the WiMax network. After one month you have a kind of pay as you go construction. So basically you can buy a new month for 9,95 euro.

Company behind the network is Worldmax

Too bad that there is no support for Apple yet. Would have loved to try it. They will come with a USB adapter in  November according to Bright.  How knows maybe that they have OSX software with the USB solution *fingers crossed*.

Bad thing is also that WorldMax uses a different solution than Sprint so the N810 Wimax doesn’t work either.. (Thanks Candyman for the info)
