LIFT09 Conference Video: What can we learn from the predictions that did not happen?

Patrick J. Gyger is the director of the Science Fiction museum in Switzerland (”Maison d’Ailleurs is located in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland. It owns over 60,000 books and thousands of pulp magazines, as well as many other items related to science fiction and its imagery”). He did a great overview of futuristic graphical and images material from the past. And had some intriguing insights.

LIFT09 Conference Video: David Rose and Connected Pillboxes

David Rose, CEO of Vitality, is a product designer, technology visionary, and social entrepreneur. He has a great story and vision about how you can get information and interactivity out of your screen and into your umbrella, your pill box or bus stop.

The Web of Things Blogs has a summation:

by Dominique Guinard

Great pleasure to be able to attend another talk from David Rose from Ambient Devices and Vitality Inc.

Instead of a pure transcription I’ll try to sum up some aspects of the talk. Note that does not entirely reflect what Dave meant but rather my interpretation
of the talk. Dave began by talking about clairvoyance and magics. He explained how they materialized these chimers into the well-known Orb which changes its color according to a trend. Dave then explained how ambient devices where between push and pull technologies, how they should be peripherial and seamless with the environment(s).

He explained how facinated he was by the idea of dashboards a information concentrators. He especially focused on how to design them in an ambient manner so that they do not turn into pizza-style-portals with too much information to be really integrated to the environment. In the field of weather forcast he presented a prototype he designed recently. This small black screen provides very general information and is very ambient when people are far away. As people come closer it displays more accurate information and increases the info bandwidth and concentration on the screen.

The next part of the talk was about life-cycles of nature and the way to map it as an output interface for ambient devices. As an example gardening and the growing of fruits and vegetables could be mapped to something like the Orb. As apples grow they change their colors (green to yellow to reddish…) the same pattern can be applied to ambient devices.

He then talked about monitoring the energy consumption, an especially interesting topic to us our Energie Visible project develops. He pointed at the fact that energy metering is already in place just not at the right place and not using the right human-computer interface. It is in our cellars when it should be informing us in our living room. In this field he introduced the off-the-shelves products of Ambient Devices Inc.

He went on talking about one of the products of Vitality Inc. The Glowcap is the world’s first Internet connected pill cap! It may sound silly but it actually has a number of uses. It can be used to coordinate re-fills for instance or to check whether you really take your medications. It reminds me of a paper we wrote a while ago about RFDiyin the hospital. But Glowcaps go far beyond and I think they encapsulate the evolution of the Internet of Things. From being able to identify things to being able to enhance and literally connect things..

The last project he talked about was the Ambient umbrella, that knows when it’s gonna rain. While it has not real use it makes a point: take the information away from your browser, embed the Internet into every-day objects.

Meet SPRX at LIFT09

I call it a brain vacation. Today I’ll be leaving for LIFT09. A conference about the future which takes place in Geneva every year. I am looking forward to the Web of Things Workshop and side events such as the Cheese fondue and MoMo Suisse. Key moment will hopefully be Vint Cerf doing his keynote.

In preparation I and others made some Zcapes to help and guide:

Zcapes has a Model and was on RWW and SmartMobs

Our startup Zcapes has a model, a 3d one. Tjek it out.

1. Live Web versus Archive

There is an increasing amount of Live data in the web. It’s about what are you doing now. Shorter and more posts giving you better feeling of what is going on now. The live web is a social web where it is all about the conversations.

2. Streams(no destination) versus Pages(publishing)

Traditional destination sites versus the new tools that give you access to the streams of the Live Web. We decided to become a destination site with streams insite. We believe that people want to go to places to get there needs fulfilled. Just see how we buy our clothes.. We go to physical or virtual worlds to compare and select the “products” that give us the value we seek. As mobile devices will become more and more a tool to help us fulfill the “everyday” needs and help us with our challenges in the ever changing context of our world.

3. Virtual versus The Physical Linked Web

We believe that mobile has a strong relation with the “physical” world(context). Context is much more complex than just location. It is about the products, events, locations and situations we are in. We try to give these “objects” a place in the web. A place that can be easily accessible when we know a bit about your context.

In conclusion Zcapes is a publishing platform with live content related to the “physical” world.

Also Zcapes is getting some traction:

Next up for Mobile: Better Identity Services

At least that’s what I said yesterday in the Financieel Dagblad. The business news paper of the Netherlands. Universal identity services on your mobile will determine who you are and help you get down to business. With banks, with stores, socially and between al these silo’s. OpenID for mobile will be an important step. It is key for the path towards Vendor Relationship Management.  Also I say that RFID chips will be a big impact. (Click to get a bigger view).
The did a whole page on mobile. Point of the article was that the device features are pretty much done now as most basics are getting covered: 3G, Camera, Speaker, GPS, etc. What people now want are good services. What application do you need on your phone? Instead op how many mega pixels the camera is. Good point. They used the ING Wegwijzer we did for ING as an example. Here is a scan of the whole page. Marc Andreessen Video Interview: He knows his Stuff

This is a hour long video where Marc Andreessen gives his take on everything concerning IT, Mobile, cloud computing, social networks and more. He has a great view of what makes the valley and other industries tick and who is doing well and why. He doesn’t seems to up to speed on mobile yet but that will come.

Marc wrote the original code for Mosaic which ended up in Internet Explorer and also started Netscape which now turned into Firefox. He can take credit for both.. In 1999 he started Loudcloud (rebranded into Opsware) which was one of the first cloud computing enterprises. He is also founder of Ning and is on the board of Facebook and ebay among others. And he is an early investor in Twitter and Qik (hmmm maybe he does get Mobile just didnt say in the interview?). He now also started his own VC fund.

Here is the transcript.

Raimo’s talk at the MWG Congress

Last week I gave a presentation at the MWG Congress in The Netherlands. The topic of the event was Experimentation. Personally I don’t believe in experimentation. In this incredible dynamic market, where there is no status quo anymore, one needs to have clear intentions.. During my presentation I used the metaphor of trying to lift one’s leg.. I asked the audience to try to lift their left leg.. Everybody reacted by lifting there leg.. I explained that they raised there leg and did not TRY to raise their leg.

Trying is nothing. You either do or you don’t!

Below you see the presentation and an interview(in dutch) by Ronnie Overgoor touching the topics of the presentation.

“Normal” Dutch House Full of Mobile Domotica

Mr. Enver Tanriverdi from the Dutch town of Nieuwegein has fully automated his house. Although I have seen many of these examples in lab-situations, I never saw this implemented to such a level in a normal home. Where an entire family lives!

The cool thing is that this guy has installed and programmed it all himself, and is controlling his curtains, lights, heating, webcams (in children’s rooms) through his mobile.

Watch the video and full article here (in Dutch, source AD):

Amazing AR Demo at the Mobile World Congress

I saw this and more examples and demonstrations live by Daniel Wagner back stage at the Mobile Peer Awards during the Mobile World Congress. I was blown away about the state of Augmented Reality on the mobile phone, the render power is really impressive.
