Interactive Grave Visits with QR-codes

Just scan the QR-code on the grave stone and see the profile of the person, including pictures, video and who else visited the grave recently. It sounds weird but is it? They do it in Japan already:

SPRXmobile is doing a national campaign in the Netherlands with the Governamental Food Authority (Voedingscentrum) including a billboard campaign with QR code and believes in 2009 QR-codes will take off.

Testing 12 Seconds

Just tried out a new service called 12 seconds. It let’s you make mini clips of 12 seconds(duh..) and post it to twitter. Also they have an iPhone app. I love that they limited the videos to 12 seconds. Just a new handy tool to distribute micro video content.

I believe this service to have a bright future!

Check out the test clip:

Testing 12 seconds.. I love it!!!! on 12seconds.tv

Here is the iPhone demo:

Video: Raimo Explains the Uitzendinggemist Mobile Application

Yesterday the Uitzendinggemist mobile application was launched. The web version of Uitzendinggemist (which means means missed broadcasts) contains most of the broadcasts from the Dutch PBS (omroepen). It is a Video On Demand platform. The mobile client streams the top 10 of the day.

In the video Raimo van der Klein from SPRXmobile explains how the application works. The camera didn’t focus that much on the phone yet you still get the idea.

Get the application by texting “GEMIST” to 3333 or go to http://m.omroep.nl/gemist on your mobile. Rights management prevents the video’s to work out side of Holland. Also make sure that you operator contract covers video streams for a reasonable fee.

The Future of the Internet is on Mobile

PEW has a new report out and it tells us that the mobile will be the primary device for online access. Also voice-recognition improves and artificial and virtual reality become more embedded in everyday life. THats nice to hear.

It based on a survey of internet leaders, activists and analyst.

Here are the key findings on the survey of experts by the Pew Internet & American Life Project that asked respondents to assess predictions about technology and its roles in the year 2020:

  • The mobile device will be the primary connection tool to the internet for most people in the world in 2020.
  • The transparency of people and organizations will increase, but that will not necessarily yield more personal integrity, social tolerance, or forgiveness.
  • Voice recognition and touch user-interfaces with the internet will be more prevalent and accepted by 2020.
  • Those working to enforce intellectual property law and copyright protection will remain in a continuing arms race, with the crackers who will find ways to copy and share content without payment.
  • The divisions between personal time and work time and between physical and virtual reality will be further erased for everyone who is connected, and the results will be mixed in their impact on basic social relations.
  • Next-generation engineering of the network to improve the current internet architecture is more likely than an effort to rebuild the architecture from scratch.

Contextual Services in Mobile

Yesterday I spoke at the Marketing Pioneers event. It was a great event in a very exciting venue. There was a kind of runway for the speakers. This made it all very lively and intimate. I really enjoyed giving my talk there. Further I met some great people. So Multiscope and @jkivit great job!

Anyway here is my presentation. I talked about what I see happening at the edges of the Mobile Services space.

Screen Literacy is still on my Mind

The last week I read an article that is still on my mind. Its Becoming Screen Literate by Kevin Kelly.

The article gave me a new insight. Kelly explains how we ‘grew’ up with word and paragraph based logic, argumentation and communication since the invention of movable type. Why an ‘author’ is an ‘authority’.

And that this is changing. Changing into image and video based communication. How everybody can make video’s, how people make their own versions of movies and how all the screens around us communicate more with images then words. We are moving from one form of literacy to another. A transition from ‘book fluency to screen fluency’ as he calls it.

I see this in my own work too. I compose presentation with images found in Flickr. And I just made a proposal in keynote where the visualized project flow also contains the key information: the needed budget and planning.

Mobile is a screen too. And we are already composing and communicating with the images and video’s we capture and send with our mobiles. When I play with Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers iPhone music app Bloom I make music and create visuals without using any words.

Just by tapping, I create.

Amsterdam Bike Route Planner Coming to the iPhone

I am a cyclist and live in Amsterdam. Although I know my way around I still sometimes want to know if there is a better route of just see what the distance is. And as a cyclist i cant do that well on TomTom or a web route planner. Those are for cars.

Until Routecraft that is. Ever since they came online I use it. It’s a sweet web app with smart features which not just gives you the route but also the amount of tree’s that you save while cycling.

And now they will launch their Iphone app on December 12th. I’ll download it!

Mobile Services designed for ONE.

Paul Hammond shows us with his MiniMuni app. how complicated context can become. He designed his personal tripadvisor tool helping him in that place and time in that specific situation. A helpful tool JUST FOR HIM.

This shows us with the big challenge around mobile. Designing services for individual context has the highest value but also has the highest cost.

Read his story here:

Every SF Muni streetcar line runs within walking distance of my house, but they all stop in different places. I can’t wait in one place and be sure to catch the next train that goes past.

I used leave the house and hope that I wouldn’t have to wait too long for a train to turn up. I’d often get to Duboce Avenue just in time to see a train disappear into the tunnel. I’d then end up waiting 10 minutes at the corner of Duboce and Church for the next J or N, wondering the whole time if I should walk to Church station and catch a K, L or M.

That got a bit much for me, so I made this:

It puts arrival information for all the stops near me on one page, and puts the emphasis on when I need to leave the house to catch a train. It tells me whether I need to get going right now, or whether I have 5 minutes to play with my kid before leaving.

I’ve had a beta version running for a few weeks, and it’s completely changed my mornings. I’m getting to work earlier and a lot less stressed.

As the about page says, if you live exactly 6 minutes from Sunset Tunnel East Portal, 8 minutes from Duboce and Church, and 10 minutes from Church Station you may find it useful too.
